NAIROBI
"Another First for the Aga Khan Univeristy Hospital, Nairobi" |
|
The Aga Khan Univeristy Hospital, Nairobi has opened the first One
Stop Breast Clinic in Kenya. The clinic is geared to provide
immediate consultation and prompt diagnosis of breast problems.
Women and men suffering with Breast Cancer symptoms such
as a breast lump, breast pain, or discharge from the nipple
are able to seek consultation and prompt diagnosis from
a highly trained and experienced team of experts.
Previously
the process of diagnosing the problem used to take more
than a week: breast patients had to report at the Family
Medicine Centre before being referred to a surgeon. “In
the one stop breast clinic, we have speeded up the process
so that it now takes only one morning and by noon if not
sooner the patient’s problem has
been diagnosed and the mode of treatment advised” says
Dr. Asad Raja the Chairman of Surgery at the hospital. “Though
every woman with a breast problem has fears of cancer,
80% turn out to be non-cancerous.”
The facilities
available at these clinics are Consultation with highly
trained and experienced Surgeons, Counseling for guidance
and help, Mammography (breast X-ray) and if necessary for
diagnosis, an Ultrasound and Biopsy will be carried out.
Early
recognition of cancer offers the best hope for cure and
quick consultation with experts can allay fears, or allow
treatment to be started promptly. The Clinic encourages
women over the age of 35 years especially those who have
not breast-fed and also those with a family history of
breast cancer to go for regular check-ups.
The One Stop
Breast Clinic is located at the Radiology Department and
is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9.00a.m
to 12 noon. For more information please contact the One
Stop Breast Clinic on telephone +254 20 366 2150.
"The Aga Khan Hospital Nairobi Upgraded to University Hospital"
|
|
It is with great pleasure that I write
to inform you that the Aga Khan Hospital Nairobi has been
upgraded to a University Hospital. The hospital was renamed
Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi (AKUH, Nairobi)
and duly registered and licensed by the Medical Practitioners
and Dentists Board of Kenya.
Established in 1958 and currently
a 254-bed facility, the hospital has been operating under
the aegis of Aga Khan Health Service, Kenya. This decision
to upgrade the Hospital was taken by the Chancellor His
Highness the Aga Khan in order to respond to the needs
of healthcare needs of the people of East Africa.
The University
Hospital is focusing on providing high quality care, research
and Postgraduate Medical Education in all major clinical
specialties; Medicine, Surgery, Radiology, Pathology, Anaesthesia,
Obstetrics-Gynaecology and Paediatrics. Patients who opt
to be treated under the university doctors will benefit
from a team based approach through the management of resident
doctors who are training in Postgraduate studies, registrars
who are newly qualified in their specialties and the lecturer
consultants. The benefit of such a model to the patient
is recognized worldwide and is the only one available in
the private healthcare system in the region.
By training
independent specialists ready to take up practising posts
in public and private sector hospitals in East Africa,
AKUH Nairobi aims to assist in significantly enhancing
the number of qualified professionals in specialist care
in a region that has long suffered from workforce attrition
and an increasing disease burden.
We aim to strengthen existing
partnerships with the Ministry of Health and other Kenyan
universities offering health education, with a view to
share experiences, strengthen public sector delivery systems
and collaborate on teaching and research.
The Aga Khan
University Hospital, Nairobi remains committed to caring
for you.
