Most of our programs are designed to reach the vulnerable groups and society, especially childbearing women and young children, with low cost medical technologies of proven effectiveness. Like many other institution that are now part of the AKDN, the roots of the present health program of AKHS, P can be traced back to late 18 century when the Aga Khan III promoted the effectiveness of immunization against infectious disease through its own personal example. In 1897, during the major epidemic of bubonic plague in the subcontinent, the 20 years old Aga Khan III allayed fears of thousands of people about harmful effects of such vaccination by himself of publicity inoculated. In 1924, he solicited the establishment of Jan Bai Maternity Home in Karachi, which became the precursor of health program under the precept of the Aga Khan Health Service, Pakistan. Today this institution is the oldest member of the AKHS, P network and is known as the Aga Khan Maternity Home, Kharadar.
